Subprime lending brought down Countrywide Home Loans, once the nation's largest mortgage lender and biggest loan servicer, which then was acquired by Bank of America. BofA said it settled Countrywide's FTC case "to avoid the expense and distraction associated with litigating the case."

Luther Findley, on a speaker phone, pleads with a Bank of America representative Dec. 9 for an extension on eviction from the Fair Oaks home he has shared with his wife, Claire, since 1996. "My wife is a quadriplegic, and I have no place to move her," Luther explains. Claire is terminally ill with ALS – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – and wants to die at home. BofA agreed last week not to evict Luther until after Claire's death.
