Anne Morrow Lindbergh smiles for the enthusiastic crowd that welcomed her and her husband, Charles A. Lindbergh as they came ashore at Natal, Brazil after flying across the South Atlantic from British West Africa, Dec. 7, 1933. She was the first woman to fly across the South Atlantic Ocean.

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida in Brasilia, Brazil, features panels of blue stained glass between the soaring buttresses. Niemeyer, who died Wednesday, wanted his buildings to be playful.

<b>The photographer:</b> Tavi Guimar&#xE3;es Popp of Fair Oaks <b>Behind the lens:</b> I took this picture a couple of years ago when traveling in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in central-western Brazil. The wildlife in this part of the country is so rich it can only be compared to Africa. Driving down that road I saw many alligators and an incredible variety of colorful birds including tuiuius &#x96; 4-foot-tall storks &#x96; among other animals. The most special moment, however, was stopping the car so that this group of capivaras (or capybaras), the largest rodents on Earth, could cross the road.

At a 1992 United Nations event known as the Earth Summit, Brazil's president signs a document as he's applauded by the U.N. secretary-general at right. Critics say the summit's Agenda 21 sets extreme environmental goals that threaten rural residents.
