There's always a kind of melancholy tinge to Labor Day, the traditional (if not numerical) End of Summer. Sure, in Sacramento, we usually don't feel the first stirrings of autumnal chill until way beyond the official start of fall (Sept. 23), but Labor Day just has that feeling of leave-taking. It's a time to squeeze in that last day of summer frivolity before hunkering down with No. 2 pencils for school and storing the ice chests back in the garage and getting back to work.
