Emmett Spraktes, 50, a California National Guardsman who completed tours as a ground medic in Iraq and a combat flight medic in Afghanistan, unwinds by lounging by the outdoor fireplace with his sons Joe, 9, and William, 21, in their pajamas after dinner.
