I took this shot shortly after dawn in the Mesquite Sand Dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. The colorful name came about after people got tired of digging in the sand to relocate the well. Some enterprising prospectors used whatever was at hand – a length of stovepipe – to mark the spot.
